6. Social Development

Social development entails learning to share, interact and empathise. Since babies are born, they start to develop social bonds (reaction to smiles and voices), which precondition future relationships. Teachers support this area by responsive caregiving and facilitated peer interactions in such a way that children feel secure and appreciated. Studies indicate that peer play enhances cooperation and sharing behaviour (Öngoren, 2022). Moreover, social skills such as cooperation and empathy are developed in toddlers due to positive teacher-child relationships and organised group activities

Social learning is incorporated throughout the curriculum by teachers. Communication and turn-taking are naturally promoted by circle time, group art, and shared story time. Cooperation and role-sharing are encouraged in dramatic play areas (such as a pretend store or kitchen).

  • 0-12 months: Basic interactive games (peekaboo, patty-cake) with teachers develop eye contact and rudimentary turn-taking.
  • 12-24 months: Parallel-play arrangements (e.g., matching toy sets next to each other) enable teachers to demonstrate sharing (e.g., passing a block to a peer) as toddlers play beside each other.
  • 2-3 years: Small group pretend play (such as managing a toy shop with one child as cashier and another as customer) involves sharing roles, negotiating turns, and polite social language.
